Carmel Perham

Carmel Perham has been volunteering in the community of Fox Harbour for the past 40 plus years. She has served on many organizations throughout the years and still volunteers today with the Fox Harbour Community Centre, the town council, the seniors club, the Fox Harbour Regional Library Board and the Sacred Heart Cemetery maintenance committee.

Outside of Carmel’s volunteer work in our community, she assists others in fund raising efforts when asked. She is very organized and efficient in the task’s she takes on. For the last 10 years, Carmel has been treasurer of the Fox Harbour Community Centre in which she has done an excellent job in maintain our records, paying invoices on time and ensuring we have enough funds. She takes a leadership role in everything she does from organizing event at the community centre to supervising students and projects that we have had over the last number of years.

I feel Carmel is very worthy of this award, not only for the excellent work she has done with the community centre but also the many hours that she has volunteered with the other organizations in Fox Harbour and surrounding communities.

Group Recognition Award

Presented to

RBC ROYAL BANK PLACENTIA

We as a branch and team have prided ourselves with our community involvement and the contributions we make. RBC is an active volunteer organization in the community. We participate weekly in the local school breakfast program at both Laval and St. Anne’s and on an annual basis at Fatima Academy. In 2019 prior to Covid-91 restrictions we donated 11, 000.00 to local charities including the Placentia Bay Historical Society, Local Cadets Unit, and to our local Special Olympics. We have employees on our team that are active volunteer members with the Port of Argentia, Freshwater Community Center, School council, and the Placentia Softball Association.

In addition to our many volunteer’s endeavors averaging about 200 hours per year, we believe in local financial wellness and education. We have hosted a variety of advice and digital sessions due to Covid 19 and prior to that were frequently seen throughout the community. We held a successful event in partnership with PADA last February which had over 90 people in attendance educating individuals on estate planning and how to protect their assets. We are frequent partners of the local schools to increase financial education and wellness of youth. We have completed group wellness sessions with students and provided advice to parents through information’s sessions on Education and Disability Saving Plan. We help support local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, Community Youth Network and PADA with community engagement activities.

Youth Recognition Award

Presented to

Katie Hann

Katie’s is a grade 12 student at Laval getting ready to launch her post secondary career in Textiles and Apparel Design at the Collage of the North Atlantic. Katie is a well rounded student who commits to many causes in her school and community.

She is an executive member of Laval’s Student Council and she has been participating in the Musical as well as the Drama fest competitions throughout high school. She has grown from a shy quite student to a confident young woman who is a role model for young people. Katie is not the person who is normally front and centre, but she is always there helping, and quietly contributing.

Except for Katie’s Cupcake Corner. This was totally her project-once a month since Grade 10 she has made and decorated gourmet cupcakes and sold them to students at recess and to increase awareness of the Janeway and to raise funds. This project required responsibility, motivation and organization-she was up for the challenge. It spread on Social Media and she began to get orders from the community. Students and teachers always brought extra money on Cupcake Day and when Katie presented the cheque it was on live TV and everyone felt like they contributed.

Throughout lockdown she has continued her project by selling cupcakes to her family and she has identified a younger student to replace her when she leaves Laval so that the project will continue. Katie a Janeway baby herself who spent the first 2 months of her life in the NICU, will likely find a way to support the Janeway through volunteerism, yet she identifies other causes and commits to them as well.

This past fall she started her own business hand sewing masks offered to every kid heading to Kindergarten at St. Anne’s. A free custom mask made with the theme of their choosing. She gave them something to feel good about as they started school in a pandemic, in their special masks made by Katie Hann.

I believe Katie is the ideal candidate for an award and if more young people took on initiatives like her our school and community would be better for it.
